LITTLE eco-warriors enjoyed a “waggle dance” modelled on the figure-of-eight motion of honey bees as they found out how the pollinators are helping to ensure the survival of our planet.

Children also had the opportunity to don bee protection suits and get close to the stinging insects during the awareness event at Greenmeadow Community Farm in Cwmbran.

Bee expert Julian Rees, from the Pollen8 Cymru group, told the youngsters about the importance of pollination for the world's crops as the farm hosted the event called Don’t Worry, Bee Happy last week.

Farm commercial manager Kate Holly said yesterday: “It was lovely.

“Over 40 children took part in bee activities. The whole point was having people to take a look and educate them to look after bees.”

It is estimated that one third of the human food supply depends on pollination, most of which is accomplished by bees, according to a US study.

The farm now has seven beehives and is planning to hold more bee awareness events. Call 01633 647 662 for more information.
