PEMBROKESHIRE-based voluntary dive group, Neptune’s Army of Rubbish Cleaners has welcomed a new volunteer.

Originally from Northern Ireland, Nicki Meharg has dived all over the world and having spent 20 years visiting Pembrokeshire, has now settled in Marloes.

Qualified as a diving instructor, Nicki is passionate about the marine environment, which attracted her to the work of the local dive group.

Nicki said: “It is fantastic to be able to use my diving skills and passion for marine conservation by joining such a reputable group like NARC.

“A few dives in, I can already see the scale of fishing debris that is a particular worry off our coastline of Pembrokeshire. It amazes me how much damage can be done by man. We all have a responsibility to protect and maintain our marine environment, particularly as we are so fortunate to be able to explore and enjoy this beautiful coastline”.

Dave Kennard, founder and chair of NARC, said: “As a group solely relying on donations and volunteers, welcoming new members of our team like Nicki is what it’s all about. Without their hard work, we could not achieve what we do.”

Encouraging others to join, Nicki adds: “To others thinking of joining as volunteers, I would urge them not to hesitate. Being part of NARC is a fantastic way of increasing your awareness of man's damage to marine life. It also allows you to improve your dive skills, while at the same time being part of a great community with a valuable purpose."

NARC celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. The group welcomes both diving and on land (non-diving) volunteers. To get in touch or find out more, please visit http://www.narc-cc.org.uk.
