MOTORISTS have been warned about road safety along the B4235 Chepstow to Usk road after a number of serious traffic collisions.

Local Chepstow officers have been working with the Monmouthshire County Council Highways Department and the “Go Safe” team in Gwent Police to try and raise awareness of road safety along the busy road.

Last Sunday, officers carried out a “Safety Awareness” operation between 10am to 3pm. The idea was to stop some of the drivers and riders who use the road and highlight road safety concerns. There was also emphasis on educating drivers about having consideration for other road users, including cyclists, horse riders or other cars and motorbikes.

The community support officers and area support officers spoke to the drivers and riders, checking the safety of their vehicles and also giving out safety literature, including “Stay Alive: Get to know the FATAL 5”.

This literature is produced by Road Safety Wales and explains about avoiding five elements road use that could result in serious or fatal injury.

They are drink driving, speeding, careless driving, wearing seatbelts and not using your mobile phone.

A Gwent Police spokesman said: "Unfortunately the weather was rainy with very little traffic using the road, however, in the afternoon when the sun came out, traffic increased and officers spoke to 27 motorbikes riders and 17 cars drivers.

"Further operations are planned along this stretch of road and officers will continue to patrol on a regular basis. Please watch your speed, consider other road users and ride and drive safely."
