SCORES on the doors reveal that four businesses in Torfaen have a zero food hygiene rating.

But one fast food outlet, previously rated zero, has now bumped its score up.

As previously reported, the KFC off the A4042 in Pontymoile was closed for a short time after having a zero rating from its inspection on May 19.

In a statement posted on the Food Standards Agency website, KFC responded and said that it "agreed with the inspection findings" but had since carried out improvements.

It has now been given a score of four, which a Torfaen council spokesman confirmed.

The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme is run by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) in partnership with councilslocal authorities.

Businesses are ranked on their hygienic food handling, the cleanliness and condition of facilities, and management of food safety.

K2 Star Kebabs oin Stanley Road, in Pontypool, was given a zero after its hygiene inspection on July 1.

The manager of the takeaway, who did not want to be named, said the issues were down to redecorating, adding: "It was mainly to do with updating the place," she said."

Panteg Employees Club, based oin Greenhill Road in Pontypool, was given a zero rating after an inspection on October 14, 2014.

Manager Dave Kenvyn, the manager, said there werewas "quite a few reasons" behind their zero rating.

"They gave us a zero rating mainly because the kitchen was over 50 years old and nothing had been done on it in that time," he said.

"It was in a very bad state of repair, but since we have taken over and had the report from the council, we have ripped out the kitchen completely and are in the process of having new units and everything else is going to be re-done."

He saidadded that council chiefs had told them if they were to be re-inspected now they would get a three, but they wanted to wait until work had finished before asking for a new rating. They are expecting to finish the work in the middle of next year.

Premier (Blaenavon Stores), based on in Broad Street, in Blaenavon, was unavailable for comment about its zero rating.

While the manager of Ming's Chinese Kitchen, in Fairwater Square, in Cwmbran, which is also rated as zero, was also unavailable for comment.
