ELI Walker has been called up to Wales’ World Cup squad to replace the injured Liam Williams.

The Ospreys speedster was initially named in Warren Gatland's 31-strong squad for the tournament but suffered a hamstring injury.

The 23-year-old is on the road to recovery, although it is unlikely to be fit enough to go straight into the XV for Saturday’s quarter-final against South Africa at Twickenham.

Walker, who impressed against Ireland in the warm-up in Cardiff in August, has received the call-up even though he is not 100 per cent fit because Wales are down to the bare bones in the back three.

Williams' foot injury meant he joined Leigh Halfpenny, Hallam Amos and Tom James on the sidelines while fellow backs Jonathan Davies, Rhys Webb, Scott Williams, Cory Allen and Jack Dixon

Wales must now ponder who slots in on the wing against the Springboks. Tyler Morgan could slot in out wide or either the Newport Gwent Dragons prospect or James Hook could feature in midfield with George North returning to the wing.
