THE number of people in Wales dying as a result of a stroke has fallen by more than 25 per cent over the past ten years.

A report published by the Welsh Government has revealed there were 2,317 deaths from stroke in 2014, a drop of 26 per cent compared with 2005, when there were 3,158.

The report also showed the number of patients admitted to a dedicated stroke ward within 24 hours increased from 50 per cent in April 2014 to 75 per cent in March 2015 as well as an increased knowledge of the signs of stroke as a result of a series of awareness campaigns.

Deputy health minister Vaughan Gething welcomed the figures.

“This report shows stroke services across Wales continue to improve with more people surviving and fewer people dying from stroke,” he said.

The report has also said services for patients recovering from strokes should be improved.

It is estimated 7,000 people in Wales suffer a stroke every year and there are currently more than 65,000 stroke survivors in the country.
