STUDENTS in Wales have been reminded to check they are on the electoral register so they can make their voices heard in May’s Assembly election.

Under the individual electoral registration scheme, which came into force in June 2014, every person in a household is required to register to vote separately. Previously one member of the household could register everyone living there.

The Welsh branch of the National Union of Students (NUS) has warned, as many students live in houses with several other young people, they may be unaware of the rules around registering to vote.

NUS Wales president Beth Button said: “By registering to vote, students are sending a message to those in power that their voice deserves to be heard.

“NUS Wales recognizes that students are directly affected by a wide range of political issues, from housing to transport, but do not feel they have a voice on these issues.

“Registering to vote is a vital step towards breaking the barriers between students and their ability to change their lives for the better”

Studies showed nearly 60 per cent of 18 to 25-year-olds voted in last year’s General Election, with young women most likely to vote.
