ROVERS had a blank Saturday after atrocious weather conditions caused the game against Wimbledon to be postponed.

The referee and club deserve praise for making an early decision on Saturday morning to save travelling fans a long and wasted journey and allow Gasheads to plan their day without watching the Pirates.

It was undoubtedly the right decision as the Memorial Stadium pitch was already saturated after a night of heavy rain and the conditions remained poor throughout the day.

Some other fixtures involving teams in the play-off race did go ahead and the results went well for Rovers, who remained in fourth place in the table by the close of play.

Orient pulled off a shock 1-0 win at Portsmouth, to see them rise to sixth and leave Pompey in seventh.

Luton and Carlisle both did the Gas a favour, beating promotion contenders Wycombe and Accrington respectively.

Northampton strengthened their grip on an automatic promotion spot, while Mansfield also entered the play-off race with a 2-1 win over Morecambe.

Cambridge also found themselves just outside the top seven after edging out Dagenham and Redbridge 1-0.

The race for promotion is looking more closely fought than ever, as by the end of Saturday there were just four points between Rovers in fourth place and Wycombe in 10th.

There will undoubtedly be plenty of twists and turns to come during the rest of the season and it will be important for the Pirates to maintain the momentum they have built up.

The closure of the transfer window last week was welcome, as we had strengthened the squad with the signings of Rory Gaffney, Liam Lawrence and Rory Fallon without losing any of our key players.

Hopefully Gaffney will soon add to his goals tally, while Lawrence and Fallon will add plenty of experience.

We also managed to retain the services of Matty Taylor and Tom Lockyer amid rumours they were being courted by other clubs.

Rovers get back to action in a tough-looking encounter at Portsmouth on Saturday, but there is no reason why we cannot return with at least a point.
