SEX and relationship education in Wales is “woefully inadequate”, a Liberal Democrat Assembly candidate has said.

Cadan ap Tomos, who is running for the Cardiff West seat, has also called for the right of parents to ask for their children to be excluded from sex education to be thrown out, ensuring every youngster is educated on these issues at an appropriate age.

“As someone who left the Welsh education system just four years ago, I know first-hand that sex and relationships education in Wales is woefully inadequate,” he said.

“My school's sex education curriculum barely dealt with the issue of sexuality, nor did it properly deal with the issue of sexual consent or healthy relationships.

“It’s no wonder that many of my peers continue to have deeply unpleasant attitudes towards women and LGBT+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and other) people.

“Every single child in Wales needs good quality, age-appropriate sex and relationships education - the attitude of your parents, or even the sort of school you attend, should not stop you from being given the best opportunity to be comfortable with who you are.

Mr Tomos also called for more resources to be put into sexual health clinics across Wales.
