UPDATE: 11.07am

Chris Haworth, sales manager of the Peugeot side of Keith Price Garages Ltd, said there was around 20 members of staff and five customers who were evacuated from the garage yesterday.

He said the car which overturned hit the top of the gas main which was around 20 metres from the garage.

He said: "The gas was gushing out you could heard it. If the gas had been ignited it would have caused an explosion and would have been very serious.
"We could smell it down the road 150 metres plus away where we were waiting behind the cordon. It could have been very nasty."

He added: "There were a few customers who were in the showroom who couldn't get to their cars because of the gas leak. We had two sets of customers who we took home because their cars were stuck in the garage.

"Luckily there was one of our cars which was out at the time of the evacuation. We couldn't go back into the premises until around 4pm.

"The road was still closed last night when I left about 6pm."

He added: "Abergavenny was in complete chaos as the roads were gridlocked. I know people who live in Crickhowell who took an hour to get home."
