ONE person was rescued from a ground floor bedroom fire in Pontypool, with five treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.

Fire crews from Abersychan, Cwmbran and New Inn attended the scene on New Inn's The Highway at just after 11.45pm on Wednesday night.

Firefighters breathing apparatus, hosereels and thermal cameras to help rescue the people from the fire.

The five people who were treated by paramedics at the scene for smoke inhalation were able to evacuate the building.

One other person was rescued by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus from the building.

A spokeswoman from the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said the fire was accidental.
