THE death of a Chepstow grandmother, who was reported missing 14 years ago, is still a mystery after her remains were found at Beaufort Quarry last February, an inquest heard.

Margaret Llewelyn's remains were discovered on February 24 but coroner David Bowen was unable to clarify the cause of death, ruling it ‘unascertained’ due to the length of time between her disappearance and her discovery.

Her husband David Charles Llewelyn and her daughter Rachel Llewelyn-Bennett were presented at the coroner’s court in Newport for the inquest.

The inquest heard how Mr Llewelyn had taken their dog for a walk, and when he returned home a quarter of an hour later, his wife had gone.

“When your wife had gone missing, there was no note,” asked Mr Bowen, regarding the date of May 6, 2002, when Mrs Llewelyn had gone missing from her home on Middle Way, Bulwark.

“No,” replied Mr Llewelyn, “she had taken nothing with her at all.

“As she had been recently in hospital, I called the police straight away.”

The inquest heard how Mrs Llewelyn, prior to her disappearance in 2002, had spent time at the Royal Gwent Hospital following a leg injury sustained at home.

Mr Llewelyn added that his wife was quite heavily medicated during her discharge from hospital and queried the decision to allow her to come home prior to her disappearance.

Her remains were found in the Beaufort Quarry due to excavation work which was taking place for a new development at the Chepstow site.

The inquest heard that following Mrs Llewelyn going missing in 2002, Gwent Police launched a full scale search for the 53-year-old, involving the Severn Area Rescue Association and dog handlers.

However, after 18 months with no further leads on her whereabouts, the police scaled back the case to a three-month review involving senior officers.

In an interview on the eighth anniversary of Mrs Llewelyn's disappearance, her daughter Rachel Llewelyn-Bennett, said that since 2002 her mum had missed the birth of her third child Holly Ann, aged seven, as well as the childhoods of her nine-year-old son Cameron and 11-year-old daughter Emily.
