A MONMOUTHSHIRE village has undergone a floral transformation ahead of being judged for the Great Britain in Bloom competition.

Mathern with Pwllmeyric and Mounton will be representing Wales in village category at the Royal Horticultural Society awards in August.

The community is one of only four Welsh entrants chosen from 72 finalists, and will be competing against Tenby, Gogarth in Llandudno and Colwyn Bay.

The competition focuses on a range of initiatives, including the management of green spaces and projects involving local residents and schools.

A spokesman for the village committee has praised the community spirit of volunteers, saying: "The whole village has really come together which is great to see.

"It's been a real community-based project, with people of all ages chipping in to help."

Several buildings have also received a makeover, with the local school getting a new lick of paint.

The Brownies group also contributed by planting a commemorative tree to honour the Queen's 90th birthday.

According to the project's spokesman, the Brownies' wildflower patch played a big part in last year's Wales in Bloom campaign, in which Mathern have won several awards.

Mathern will also be competing in the Wales in Bloom awards in the village category,

Last year, they missed out on a gold medal by just a point but they are hoping to improve in both competitions.

The village will be judged for Wales in Bloom on Wednesday July 6 at 3.30pm and for Britain in Bloom on August 1 at 9.30am.

Andrea Van Sittart, RHS head of community outreach said: “We would like to congratulate Mathern with Pwllmeyric and Mounton for reaching the UK finals of RHS Britain in Bloom.

"It’s a tremendous achievement and illustrates the group’s impressive commitment to improving their local environment.”
