A CALDICOT father has vowed to never shop in Tesco again after his toddler choked on a chopped up chicken breast that was supposed to have been pre-diced by the supermarket giant.

Lewis Johns, 23, got a nasty surprise after he served up a home-made stir-fry to his partner, Stacey Pugh, 21, and their 10-month old baby, Charlie, at home last week.

The retail manager had purchased what should have been a boneless chicken breast in the Tesco store in Chepstow on his way home from work..

Having then painstakingly chopped up the dish for his baby, Mr Johns said he had to make Charlie sick after he began choking on it.

“He used his fingers to eat as babies do,” he said. “He started chewing on it and started choking on the piece of bone.

“My instant reaction was to put my finger in his throat to get what was there out.

“When it came up I was absolutely shocked that was in a piece of chicken. The bone was that sharp that it could’ve cut the inside of his throat so it could’ve been worse than it was.”

Following the incident, Mr Johns brought the packaging back to the store and was given a £3 refund and told he would hear more about the store investigation within two weeks.

He said he usually bought unlabelled chicken breasts, which customers then dice themselves at home, but did not think twice when he saw it was pre-diced.

“It’s really put me off buying chicken, especially from them,” he said. “It’s put me off Tesco as a whole. Their quality control is really poor.

“Luckily, Charlie was absolutely fine. He didn’t like me doing that to him but I think it was OK. There was no blood brought up thank God so it could’ve been worse.”

A Tesco spokesman said: “There’s nothing more important to us than the quality of our food so we were concerned to hear of this incident.

“We are investigating this complaint with our supplier and will update Mr Johns with our findings.”
