A MONMOUTHSHIRE director’s debut film has made its way onto the popular streaming service, Netflix.

‘Convenience’, a comedy directed by Keri Collins, of Portskewett, follows two bungling robbers attempting to rob a shop.

It follows two ‘idiots’ who attempt to rob a shop but have to wait until the safe unlocks the following morning, forcing them to have to pretend they work in the shop.

The lead robbers Ajay and Shaan, played by producer Ray Panthaki and Adeel Akhtar respectively, are faced with having to convince shop supervisor Levi, played by ‘This is England’ star Vicky McClure. “It had a very small budget but to have someone like Vicky McClure on board was a massive success for the film,” said Mr Collins.

“She was absolutely brilliant and despite being one of the biggest stars in the film, she was very down to earth and just one of the team.”

‘Convenience’ earned 37-year-old Collins a BAFTA Cymru breakthrough award in 2014 and positive reviews from the likes of Empire magazine.

According to the Pontypool-born director, he had no expectations of scooping the prize, saying: “Obviously it was was huge but I didn’t expect to win it at all, it was really quite a shock. “What was really pleasing for me was that it was a comedy that won it, and I don’t think comedies get respected enough as an award-winning art form.”

With the rise in popularity of Netflix, Mr Collins admits that having his film on the service is a ‘huge deal’. He said: “As we had a small budget we weren’t able to really get the film out there as much as we’d like. On Netflix, people seem to look for films that look visually appealing to them and I think it will really find its audience on there.”
