OLYMPIC silver medallist Mark Cavendish has confirmed that he will be cycling through Gwent when he takes part in the Tour of Britain next month.

The Manxman, who competed in the omnium at Rio 2016, joins a host of top names from the world of cycling taking place in the race, including sprinter André Greipel and former UCI World Hour Record holder Rohan Dennis.

Stages four and five take place in Wales, with the latter – on Thursday, September 8 – running from Aberdare to Bath, taking in parts of Caerphilly, Torfaen and Monmouthshire.

Race director Mick Bennett said: "In Mark Cavendish and André Greipel we have two of the world's top sprinters, who are both already multiple Tour of Britain stage winners, while we are delighted that BMC Racing Team will be bringing two outstanding time trialists in Rohan Dennis and Taylor Phinney to the race.

"This is the first of several exciting rider announcements that fans can look forward to and will build excitement for what will be another world-class edition of the Tour of Britain.”

The Tour of Britain will be the 31-year-old’s first race since his Olympic success, and the tour will take place from September 4 to 11, finishing in London.
