A PROJECT to build a new community hub in Raglan has takes another step closer to completion after the Raglan Village Hall Association (RVHA) secured a lottery grant.

The purpose of the hub, estimated to cost around £900,000. is to involve people in community-led programmes, improve access to services and reduce social isolation.

Following initial consultations, the RVHA submitted their plans to the Big Lottery Fund and in turn received a £47,904 grant deemed 'critical' for the project's next stage.

Chris Butler-Donnelly, chair of RVHA said: “We are delighted that the potential of the project has been recognised by the Big Lottery, and are very grateful for their backing.

"Thanks to the funding from the Big Lottery, support from Monmouthshire County Council, and the hard work of local groups, individuals and businesses, the next stage of this exciting project can begin.”

Work will now get underway to develop the design details of the hub on the site of the former junior school in the centre of Raglan, and to obtain full planning permission.

Paul Matthews, Monmouthshire County Council’s chief executive said that he was 'amazed" at the RVHA's commitment, having worked closely with them for two years.

He added: "They are an inspiring group for any community and are thoroughly deserving of this funding.”

Monmouth AM Nick Ramsay also welcomed the news, saying: “This is great news for the village and a well deserved success for members of the village hall committee who have worked incredibly hard to bring Raglan a step closer to having a facility of which the village can be proud.

“Thanks to their efforts, the RVHA can move on to the next stage of the project in which local people will be given the opportunity to have their say on the design of the new community hub."

The RVHA are continuing to fundraise for the project through local events, including a race night and grand draw on Saturday September 24 in Raglan Old Church School.

The group meet in Raglan Old Church School on the third Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm and meetings are open to all.
