THE Road to Rio van finished off its last stops yesterday after an adventurous few months touring session for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The van toured its way around Gwent in order to give people a chance to have a go at Olympic and Paralympic sports.

Stopping at sporting venues, schools, local parks and various other places, residents could get into the spirit of the 2016 Rio Olympics by trying out more than 15 various Olympic sports.

The project started on May 28 at a variety sites across the city and included sports such as hockey, badminton, tennis, volleyball, archery, boxing and more.

The van, in partnership with Newport Live, Charter Housing, Newport City Homes, Linc Cymru, Monmouthshire Housing and Tesco, aimed to provide local residents with the sports to encourage them to become more active.

Andrea Hall, commercial director for Newport Live said that the Road to Rio van may have finished along with the Olympics, but she hopes that its legacy will continue.

She said: “It has been incredible the way we have been able to get our initiative into the community with the partnerships involved. It has been great.”

Miss Hall believes that getting people to participate in sport has helped in more ways than one.

“It has brought out so many other things like confidence and awareness," she said. "Sport is so much more than just a sport, it does a lot more for people.”
