AROUND 100 people turned up to Llanfoist Bridge on Friday to hold a peaceful protest against Donald Trump’s inauguration.

The event saw local community groups, Quakers and residents, turn up at the bridge in Abergavenny during the #BridgesNotWalls demonstration.

The protest was a UK wide demonstration by the organisation Bridges Not Walls, a partnership between grassroots activists and campaigners working on a diverse range of issues, formed in the wake of Trump’s election.

Thousands of people around the UK joined in with the protest, and dropped banners from their local bridges as well.

Francis Buxton, who helped set up the #BridgesNotWalls demonstration in Abergavenny and is part of the Global Justice Now group, said the event was a big success.

He said: “The number of people there was double what I had expected. Everyone who was there felt like it was a worthwhile event, and I guess the sunshine helped that afternoon as well.

“All of us who were there feel strongly about standing against Trump."

The 75-year-old said his son lives in the US with his family, and said Trump being in power worries them.

“My son and daughter-in-law live in California,” he said.

“There’s a lot of people there who feel the same as they do so they have support there.

“My daughter-in-law, who is Californian, said she was very surprised and pleased that we are causing and making a noise.”

The event saw members from Abergavenny Transition Town, Friends of the Earth and a local Quaker group also join in with the protest.
