AN INJURED walker had to be stretchered off Ysgyryd Fawr (Skirrid) mountain on Sunday afternoon.

Abergavenny’s Longtown Mountain Rescue Team was called out by Gwent Police at 1.30pm.

A 49-year-old woman, from Bristol, had been part of a walking group when she’d slipped and suffered lower leg injuries.

She had been left unable to move and stranded at approximately 1200ft up on the north-western side of the mountain.

After a search in heavy rain and high winds the rescue team located the woman and her companions.

She was treated on the scene by team medics then stretched down to a roadside ambulance and on to Nevill Hall.

Luke Lewis, team leader of Longtown MRT, said “They did exactly the right thing and the woman and her friends were well equipped to shelter from the elements until we arrived.

“I’d like to pay tribute to the professionalism of team members who turn out at all times and in all weathers to help the lost and injured.

“We were glad to help and wish her a speedy recovery.”
