THE streets of Caldicot were filled with colour and visitors yesterday when the town carnival returned for another year.

The carnival parade started at noon from King George V Playing Fields, going through the town centre down Church Road before finishing off at Caldicot Castle.

This year’s parade was themed around Roald Dahl books.

Mum Heidi Marriott-Trevains, from Chepstow, was at the carnival with her son, who took part in the parade with his school, Ysgol Gymraeg Y Ffin.

She said: “The school went with the theme of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

“The kids were dressed up as chocolate bars and oompa loompas, while one of the teachers dressed up a tricycle as one of the machines that goes through the factory.

“I think today has been really good. It helps the children feel part of the community and brings the community together.

“It is an opportunity for everyone to be outside and get some fresh air as well.”

In the Castle grounds, there was live music, performances from local groups, stalls and a fun fair.

The event also included free pony rides, a bar, a bouncy castle and much more.

The carnival, which was a free event, was organised by Caldicot Events Committee.

Pauline Hayward, secretary of Caldicot Events Committee, said: “We have had hundreds of people here today, it is getting more and more popular. We are happy it keeps growing.

“It has been brilliant. Everyone seems to be having a good time and the weather seems to be cooperating.

“With community events like this we are trying to have events where everybody can join in and have fun for free.

“It is very important for us to get the community together. “
