STAFF from a Pontypool care home have been applauded for their work to increase awareness and understanding of dementia.
Torfaen AM Lynne Neagle visited Plas-y-Garn Care Home in Penygarn and presented staff with a Dementia Friendly Community accreditation, an Alzheimer’s Society award given to organisations which care for and work with people with the condition.
The home has weekly visits by schoolchildren, who entertain residents with songs and other activities.
Speaking at the care home, Ms Neagle said: “It is great to see children engaging in activities with elderly people living with dementia, which will of course give them a better understanding of the disease.
“One of the most powerful things that we can do in the face of dementia is continue to raise awareness of it, not just amongst adults, but amongst the younger generation as well.”
