A FITNESS-BASED fundraiser will be held in Pontypool on Friday, September 22 in support of Scott Bessant and his family.

The ex-Wales Dragonhearts full back, 34, was found lying in Pentwyn Lane, Abersychan, at around 5.15am on Sunday, August 13.

He remains in a critical condition in intensive care, with injuries which are described as “life-changing”.

“Bootcamp for Scott” will take place at The Landing, Pentwyn, starting at 6.30pm and has been organised by Rachael Pugh, a family friend and personal trainer from Pontypool.

Miss Pugh, the owner of Shelite Fitness Personal Training, said: “I’ve known the Bessants from quite a young age and I’ve grown up knowing Sian and Rachael (Mr Bessant’s sisters), who are a similar age to me.

“We all want to know what happened to Scott following the accident and I just wanted to do something to help the family out.

“As a self-employed personal trainer, I just thought it was a good opportunity to do something fun which could raise money, which could be used towards helping Scott’s family with his rehabilitation.

“I picked the bootcamp as it is something which Scott would enjoy – doing something physical while rolling in the mud.

“Hopefully we can make enough noise on the day to wake Scott up.”

The bootcamp is open to people of all abilities and although there is no limit to the number of teams taking part, Miss Pugh is asking for participants to form teams of five.

Miss Pugh is hoping to secure some tractor tyres for the event, and is appealing to local farmers to help out for the event.

“I am hoping to get hold of a number of large tractor tyres for the bootcamp and I am appealing to any farmers or anyone else in the local area who may have some which we could use on Friday,” she said.

The personal trainer added that it will cost a donation of £10 to take part in the bootcamp, which must be paid in advance as cash cannot be paid on the day.
