A SPECIAL meeting on plans to build a £226,000 events pavilion in the grounds of Abergavenny Castle will be held next week.

The structure is intended to make use of empty space in the castle grounds and host an annual programme of events which would help generate income for the local authority’s museum service.

The proposal also requests a loan of £32,000 of match funding from the council’s reserves to pay towards the six-figure financial outlay.

The outline business cases is one several that have been considered by the council after it approved a Five Year Forward plan in December 2016.

The programme is informed by a 2015 review which acknowledged Monmouthshire as “a county steeped in culture with significant tourist appeal”.

A planning application for the pavilion is expected to be submitted to the council later this month or in early November.

The Abergavenny castle site is leased from the Nevill Estate, an agreement which has been in place since the nineteenth century.

The current lease expires in August 2020 so should the proposal be approved, then the terms would have be renegotiated.

Members of the economy and development select committee meet on Thursday October 26.
