THOUSANDS of people turned up to celebrate this year’s Christmas lights switch on at the Cwmbran Centre last week.

There was cheers, dancing and laughter despite the rain last night, and entertainment by Peter Pan, Aladdin and Captain Hook kept the crowds happy.

This years event, held on Wednesday, November 15, saw a whole host of panto characters involved, including Cinderella and Prince Charming.

The lights were switched on after Tinkerbell flew over the crowd in a magic lamp and appeared on the stage.

Everyone enjoyed dancing to musical statues and were entertained by Aladdin and guests.

Some of the acts on stage included singer Scott Alexander Howells.

The classically trained singer was chosen to sing for Princess Anne at 14 and appeared as a member of Only Boys Aloud, as they finished runner-up on Britain’s Got Talent.

Fellow act Tom Auton also got the crowd dancing along.

Nant Celyn Primary School's choir performed a dance routine as Peter Pan’s lost boys while the school choir sang festive songs.

And it was a pantomime round-up as Hook, Aladdin and Tinker Bell turned the lights on together.

Angela Davies, of Cwmbran, attended the switch on with her partner and four-year-old daughter Amy.

She said: “It’s been a good event despite this rain and Amy has loved it, especially Peter Pan and Tinkerbell.”

Cwmbran Centre manager Rikki Teml said it had been another big production.

“It’s taken us quite a lot of planning for this event and all staff have worked hard,” he added.
