A HOUSING association service which allows elderly people to maintain their independence has become a dementia friendly organisation.

Care & Repair Monmouthshire and Torfaen, part of Melin Homes, provides advice and improvements with the aim of keeping homeowners and private tenants in their properties.

The scheme received the Alzheimer’s Society kite mark at the social landlord’s Pontypool headquarters to recognise the agency’s inclusive and supportive services for people living with dementia, their families and carers.

Nicola Maule, the Care and Repair Monmouthshire and Torfaen manager, said: “In Wales there are over 45,000 people living with dementia and as we have an ageing population the numbers are likely to increase.

“It makes sense that as a caring organisation we do our best to make our services accessible.

“It’s imperative that our staff are armed with a greater understanding of what it is like to live with dementia.”

The award was presented on Friday, November 17 by Torfaen's Cllr Mandy Owen and Monmouthshire's Cllr Penny Jones.
