AN ASPIRING doctor is hoping to become the sixth generation of his family to work in the medical profession.

Charlie Walker, 16, wants to follow in the footsteps of his father, Russell, a vastly experienced surgeon at Nevill Hall Hospital in Abergavenny.

The Monmouth School for Boys’ pupil was the overall winner last year in the Wales’ Schools surgical essay competition run by The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Now the A-level student has been accepted as a School Ambassador on a national mentoring scheme called Medic Mentor.

Charlie is is looking forward to helping other young people who will be applying for health care-related degrees.

“Medic Mentor is a national organisation that works with young people, mainly those from disadvantaged backgrounds who are applying for health care-related degrees like medicine or dentistry,” said Charlie, who is studying A-levels in biology, chemistry, French and Russian.

“My dad is a fifth generation doctor in our family and I am hoping to follow in his footsteps.

“In my new role as a School Ambassador, I will be working with a team to discuss some of the hurdles that university applicants might face and we will be trying to work out how to overcome them."
