A BALLET performance of the novel, The Lady of the Camellias, will be screened live from Moscow at the Drill Hall in Chepstow.

Alexandre Dumas’ 19th century novel tells of how the young and naïve Armand, arriving in Paris for the first time, becomes captivated by the courtesan Marguerite Gautier.

She is celebrated in Parisian high society, but Armand wins her heart and convinces her to leave her way of life and rich patrons to live with him in the country.

But their passionate love affair is doomed.

The story is well-known, immortalized in the famous opera -La Traviata- as well as in ballet with different productions.

In the UK, ballet fans will know the version Marguerite and Armand, created for Margot Fonteyn and Rudolph Nureyev.

The production will be screened at the Drill Hall, in Lower Church Street, Chepstow, on Sunday, February 4 at 3pm.

The screening will be of the interpretation created in 1979 by John Neumeier, but which has only been performed by the Bolshoi ballet since 2014.

A spokeswoman for organisers Chepstow Museum said: "Captured live in Moscow the ballet will be screened at Chepstow’s Drill Hall and is a fantastic opportunity for ballet fans of all ages to enjoy world class ballet on the doorstep."

The spokeswoman added: "The Bolshoi Ballet breathes new life into this tragic masterpiece and takes it to new emotional heights through the strong dramatic roles which it gives to the dancers.

"Accompanied by the romantic piano music of Chopin, this is a striking and beautiful ballet."

The screening is being shown as a fundraiser for Chepstow Museum, based in Bridge Street.
