RESIDENTS will be able to get an update on the progress of a project to convert parts of the A465 into a dual carriageway.

A visitor centre will be open from 1pm to 5pm today, and every Wednesday, allowing visitors to track the progress of the long-running Heads of the Valleys duelling project between Brynmawr and Abergavenny.

At the centre in Ty-Gwyn Road, Twyn Wenallt, Gilwern, residents will be able to see how the road will look when completed, talk to the team behind the project and see pictures.

The work, being carried out by Costain on behalf of the Welsh Government, was originally estimated to cost around £220 million but now is said to be 23 per cent over budget, and due to be completed by the autumn of 2019.

The improvements to the road aim to boost the social and economic regeneration of the Heads of the Valleys area.

A regional traffic study in 1990 identified the need to improve the road.

The width of the road restricts traffic flow and opportunities for safe overtaking and there is also poor visibility.
