MONEY was stolen from a church donation box after a church was broken into by thieves.

The break-in happened St Marys Priory church in Abergavenny between 1.30pm and 5.30pm on Sunday.

A padlock on the church’s donations box was broken and change was taken from inside.

Canon Mark Soady said the damaged safe will have to be replaced at a “considerable cost” to the church.

He said: "It does leave you feeling slightly unnerved to think people would cause sacrilege in what is a sacred building which is loved and respected by the vast majority of people in the town.”

Canon Soady said the church is currently reviewing CCTV footage.

He said the theft comes after a string of recent incidents including a handbag belonging to a church staff member being stolen and a man seen behaving suspiciously by trying to move CCTV.

Police inquiries are ongoing.
