A GWENT choir will represent Wales at a prestigious royal engagement which is being held this afternoon.

The Caldicot Male Voice Choir from Monmouthshire are the only choir to represent the Association of Welsh Male Voice Choirs at a special patronage garden party which is being held at Buckingham Palace.

The garden party is being held to celebrate Prince Charles’ 70th Birthday, which falls on November 14.

The choir have learned that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, have postponed their honeymoon to attend the garden party.

This means that the event will be their first official engagement as a married couple.

Lyn Gauntlett, spokesperson for the choir, said: “We will be delighted and honoured as the only Welsh choir present on the day to sing for them.

“More than sixty choristers will be singing a mixture of famous Welsh songs and hymns for about thirty minutes on the garden steps at 4pm.”

Their performance at the palace follows an appearance at the Festival of Massed Male Voices at the Royal Albert Hall, which was held on the day of the royal wedding.

Singers from the Caldicot choir were part of the massed choir which performed on Saturday evening.

The choir, which was made up of approximately 850 choristers, was accompanied by soloists Rhydian Jenkins, Ffion Edwards and Samantha Oxborough, who were all winners of the Geraint Morris Award.

The choir was led by the world famous Dr Alwyn Humphreys MBE.
