A YOUNG cricket player from Monmouth recently met one of the game’s legendary players, Sachin Tendulkar, while playing for Wales under-14s.

Harry Hughes, from Monmouth, picked up some batting tips from the former Indian cricketer, who is the highest run scorer in international cricket and is widely regarded as one of the best batsmen of all time.

Harry, 14, said: “It was unbelievable to meet one of my cricketing heroes and to have a quick chat with him.

“I have been playing cricket since I was about three years old and to bump into Sachin was a once-in-a-lifetime moment.

“He told me that cricket will always have a special place in his heart.

“Sachin encouraged me to keep enjoying my batting and, most important of all, to play every ball on its merit and to watch the ball at all times.”

The superstar batsman has just launched The Tendulkar Middlesex Global Academy and was a special guest at Lord’s for India’s Test match with England.

The advice received from the ‘Little Master’ clearly worked – Harry, the team’s wicketkeeper, went on to take three catches and two stumpings as Wales narrowly lost to Middlesex by 31 runs in an exciting two-day match.

Harry also made his debut for Monmouth Cricket Club’s first team on Saturday (August 11), hitting 33 runs from just 42 balls against Cardiff Central.
