PLANS for the second phase of a major development to build around 150 homes and create a new village centre near Newport have been outlined.

Redrow Homes has submitted a reserved matters application to build 152 homes on land near Cot Hill in Llanwern, Newport.

As well as homes, the proposals include creating a 'village centre,' sports pitches, primary school and allotments.

The masterplan for the development, which has been approved by Newport City Council, is for up to 1,100 homes to be built at the site.

The plans have long been in the pipeline after proposals for up to 1,100 homes were originally approved back in 2007, despite protests from the Llanwern Village Action group.

A reserved matters application lodged last week says the development will bring "significant community and economic benefits."

"Fundamentally, the development will provide a number of modern homes in a high-quality environment," a design and access statement says.

"These homes will help satisfy a basic social need that the council must plan for, on an accessible site and in a sustainable location."

The phase of the development totals 112 homes.

The development would bring 168 full-time jobs in construction and 224 supply chain jobs, according to the application.

Eight of the homes are earmarked as 'affordable' in this phase of the development.

All of the homes will be a maximum of two-storey height, with their appearance planned to be in keeping with the surrounding area.

The development will also come with 31 visitor parking spaces, while motorists will be able to access the site from six different points, it is said.

Local facilities are within walking distance to the proposed site, which is also located close to Newport Retail Park, Langstone Business Village and the Celtic Manor Resort.

Four areas of public open space are also proposed in the development, while a "woodland buffer" to Hartridge Wood has been accommodated.

The application says the scale of the development is suitable so that it can be integrated within its setting.
