OVERMONNOW Primary School clinched the top prize at the 22nd edition of The Grange Invitation Six-a-Side Football Tournament, held in Monmouth last week.

Overmonnow’s A-team played some excellent football, and won the cup with a 4-1 victory over Pentrepoeth Primary, Newport, on January 23.

This year is the second time that Overmonnow has won the annual tournament. The school's other win came in 2002.

At the tournament, hosted and organised by Monmouth School Boys’ Prep, Kymin View won the plate for the second time after a comprehensive 5-0 victory over Cross Ash in the final.

The hosts, Monmouth School Boys’ Prep, clinched two trophies.

The school’s A-team won the shield after a 4-1 win over Pentrepoeth Primary, and the C-team held their nerve against Overmonnow B in a penalty shoot-out to take the bowl. The match had ended 1-1 after extra time.

The 12-team tournament, which took place on the new pitches at Monmouth School for Boys’ Sports Club, also included Osbaston Church in Wales School, who won the cup competition last year.

Headteacher at Monmouth School Boys’ Prep, Neil Shaw, presented the medals and trophies to the winners. Mr Shaw said he was very impressed with the high standard of football on show throughout and the outstanding levels of good behaviour and teamwork.

He thanked organisers, Paul Morris and Kevin Shepherd; and all the referees, teachers, coaches and parents for their support. He also thanked the Friends of The Grange School for providing hot drinks on a cold but very enjoyable afternoon.
