THE number of schools in Torfaen that are ranked in the top ranking in the Wales school bandings has risen.

The Welsh government’s National School Categorisation System, introduced in 2014, places schools into one of four colour-coded support categories – green, yellow, amber, and red – to demonstrate the level of support they need.

The number of schools ranked in the ‘Green’ band has risen in Torfaen from 11 to 16.

Coupled with this, the number of Torfaen schools in the lowest band, ‘Red’, has fallen from five to two.

The number of ‘Yellow’ schools, the second highest category, fell from 11 to eight, with most of those schools moving up to the top band.

Schools categorised as ‘Amber’ rose, with three previously ‘Red’ schools, Ysgol Bryn Onnen, Abersychan Comprehensive and Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw, moving up.

Possibly the biggest success story in the county was Henllys Church in Wales Primary, which rose from the ‘Red’ category to the ‘Yellow’.

The results for Torfaen were largely successful, with the only school to fall was Ponthir Church in Wales School.
