A GRANDMOTHER living at Arthur Jenkins Care Home in Blaenavon celebrated her 100th birthday on Sunday.

Gertrude Price or Betty as she’s known to everyone, celebrated her 100th birthday in the company of her family, fellow residents, carers and staff at the home.

Staff at Arthur Jenkins organised the special get together, which included a buffet, gifts and a birthday cake made by the home’s cook. There was also live entertainment from musical duo Omega2 who had residents singing and clapping along.

Born in Blackwood, Mrs Price lived in the area until moving to Blaenavon at the age of 12.

Ten years late she later married William James Price, known as Jim, and they had two daughters, Susan and Gillian.

Mrs Price also has two grandchildren, one of whom lives in Australia and surprised her by visiting Arthur Jenkins last week straight from the airport.

Despite her poor eyesight, Mrs Price is a fiercely independent lady, and enjoys all the activities and entertainment that take place at the home.

When asked what is the best thing about living at Arthur Jenkins, Mrs Price said: “I am still part of my community and I have lots of visitors who bring me fresh flowers which I love.”

Jane Saunders, manager at Arthur Jenkins, told us: “It’s an absolute pleasure to celebrate Betty’s special birthday and it’s lovely that her family and friends could join us.”
