NEWPORT County goal machine Padraig Amond, renowned boxing trainer Tony Borg and Valleys Gymnastics Academy chief Melissa Anderson are among the finalists in this year’s South Wales Argus Sports Awards, which take place at Chepstow Racecourse next month.

A total of 13 prizes will be dished out on Wednesday, May 22 with all individual winners in the running for the South Wales Argus Sports Personality of the Year award, won in 2018 by Exiles manager Michael Flynn.

Last week saw a panel of judges convene to whittle down the nominations to determine the three finalists in each category, and there will be a wide variety of sports represented on the night.

County striker Amond and Borg are joined in the running for the Professional Sports Personality of the Year gong by Commonwealth Games silver medal cyclist Jon Mould.

And Mould isn’t the only rider to be up for an award, with youngster Zach Bridges and world champion James Ball contenders for Grassroots Sports Personality of the Year and Disability Sports Performer of the Year respectively.

Taekwondo ace Maya Levan and Tillery Combat head honcho Richard Shore are also in contention with Bridges, while Ball is up against gymnasts Shauna Morgan and Bethany Paull, who won the disability performer accolade last year.

Another gymnast, Ben Scourse, and taekwondo star Kriya Pahimna are in the running for Young Sports Personality of the Year with dressage’s Poppy Stowell-Evans.

Malpas Cricket Club’s Don Martin, Cwmbran Otters Swimming Club’s Gerald Sims and Ceri Thomas of Torfaen Riding Club contest the Volunteer of the Year prize.

Coach of the Year sees Valleys Gymnastics Academy duo Luke Carpenter and Natasha Le-Sauteur battle it out with Angus Rogers from Heads of the Valleys Tang Soo Do.

While Anderson, Vicki Randall and Colin Simmons are up for the Outstanding Services to Sport in Gwent award.

Amond, Dan Butler and Joe Day are the finalists for Newport County AFC Player of the Year, while the Dragons Player of the Year gong is between Elliot Dee, Lloyd Fairbrother and Aaron Wainwright.

In the team and club categories, the Dragons Under-18s, Newport Cricket Club’s first XI and Pontypool RFC’s first XV go for the Senior Team of the Year award.

Junior Team of the Year is between Cromwell Youth AFC Under-16s, Cwmffrwdoer FC Under-12s and Valleys Gymnastics Academy’s Team Gym team.
