THE family of a 19-year-old who died in an alleged ‘hit-and-run’ incident have paid tribute to him, calling him their “cherished son”.

Rhys Dobson, from the Pontypool area, died in the early hours of Sunday, April 14, following a collision with a vehicle on Varteg Road in Blaenavon.

Gwent Police attended the incident, but Mr Dobson was confirmed as dead at the scene.

In a statement, Mr Dobson’s family paid tribute to the 19-year-old. They said: “Our much beloved son Rhys Dobson was tragically killed in a RTC on April 14 on Varteg Road.

“As parents we are devastated to lose our cherished son who was just starting out in his adult life. We thank our friends and family and Gwent Police for their professionalism and compassion. We will always love him.

“We ask that people kindly respect our privacy in this difficult time.”

A 36-year-old man from the Blaenavon area was arrested on suspicion of death by driving without due care and failing to remain at the scene of a road traffic collision.

He has since been released under investigation.

A police spokeswoman said: “Officers are appealing for information from anyone that could help with their enquiries and would be particularly interested in hearing from the driver of a black coloured taxi which was seen driving along Varteg Road between 3am and 3.30am of Sunday morning.
