VANDALS have attacked a rugby team's clubhouse for a third time in a matter of months and left it facing a hefty bill.

Bricks were used by youths to both smash and damage a number of windows at The Open Hearth Pub, which is used as Hartridge RFC's base, in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Paul Osmond, who is the chairman of the club, said the latest spat of vandalism will cost the club an estimated £3,000 to rectify.

"It is really frustrating," said the chairman.

"Why would anyone want to do something like this?

"These windows are not cheap to fix. In fact, most of them will need to be replaced altogether.

"As a club, we were doing quite well. But with these incidents it is causing us to lose money because we have to fix these problems."

Smashed window

The clubhouse was twice targeted in January, where yobs broke a vent, only for them to return weeks later to smash more windows.

Despite installing three additional security cameras three months ago, vandals have not been deterred.

And Mr Osmond has now revealed that the latest incident did throw the site's future into question.

"We want to continue using this as our clubhouse and do not want to leave," he said.

"But how can we go on like we are? We cannot carry on forking out thousands of pounds to sort these problems.

"At one stage I did think we may have to leave. But, if we did leave, the vandals would have won.

"We just want them to leave us alone."

Gwent Police have been contacted for comment.
