SOUTH Wales Fire Service were called out after bins were set on fire at the former Yew Tree pub on Maendy Way in Cwmbran.

Residents reported that a group of youths were causing damage to the fence around the pub to gain access to the site, which is set to be knocked down and replaced by social housing by Bron Afon.

Local resident Steven Nott said “They broke in to the pub twice yesterday and Bron Afon came out and boarded it up.

“They ripped down parts of the fence and were burning it in nearby bins between 9pm and 10pm.”

Mr Nott reported that both the police and fire service were in attendance.

Greg Jones, head of development and regeneration at Bron Afon, said: “We are aware of the issue and have sent staff to repair the fence today as well as refasten the window shutters. We have also checked the CCTV and alarm system and will be passing on the footage to the police to investigate further.

“We will be replacing the whole fence early next week with Heras Fencing and carrying out daily checks throughout the day and evening to monitor the site. We urge anyone who sees anything suspicious to call the police on 101 or Bron Afon on 01633 620111”
