THE Severn Area Rescue Association (SARA) has announced plans to provide a new rescue facility at Tewkesbury.

SARA is a declared facility to H.M. Coastguard and provides a unique Search and Rescue service on the River Severn and all associated waterways from the tidal estuary to the upper reaches.

SARA was deployed extensively during the July flooding throughout Gloucestershire, initially on rescues and then providing assistance to the Ambulance service to reach emergency calls cut off by the flood water.

Alan Stanley, the Association's Executive Chairman, said "Our new Tewkesbury facility will fill the current gap between our stations based at Sharpness and Wyre Forest (Arley) and provide us with complete cover along the river"

Alan Stanley went on to say: "With the support of the local people living in and around Tewkesbury we would hope to build a strong team of committed volunteers not just for flooding incidents but to assist with the many diverse tasks we undertake for the police throughout our operational area".

SARA is looking to recruit volunteer members for both fundraising and operational duties from Tewkesbury and the surrounding area. Applications can be obtained by phoning the Executive Secretary on the General Enquiry Line 0870 060 2001.
