STAFF and residents and Gibraltar House in Monmouth had reason to celebrate yesterday, as resident Emily Thomas commemorated her 104th birthday.
Emily enjoyed a special day, with members of her family, balloons, banners and the all important birthday cake arrived to a chorus of 'Happy Birthday'.
Emily Thomas (nee Plant) the last of nine children, born in Greendale, Staffordshire grew up in a tiny cottage in the countryside, walking half a mile to the nearest well for drinking water and two miles to school each day.
Stephane Beaumont, nurse manager of Gibraltar told us: "Emily is one of a kind, she has such strength of character, she used to tell us stories of her childhood and owes her longevity of life to growing up in the countryside and damn hard work.
"Nowadays she enjoys a nice cup of tea accompanied by our chef's freshly baked cakes."
