County gets just £87k of £3million

MONMOUTHSHIRE has received £87,278 from a £3million cash boost to communities announced by Jane Davidson, the Welsh minister for the environment.

The Tidy Towns scheme will provide money for Councils to run a wide range of projects to improve their local environment and transform areas of neglect into positive places for people to spend time. Projects could range from litter picking, graffiti removal to creating new wildlife habitat areas, community gardens or arts projects to bring back areas of neglect into community use.

Earlier this year the Minister announced £1million of funding for Keep Wales Tidy to appoint a Tidy Towns champion on each local authority area to facilitate projects like these.

MsDavidson said: "This is a great example of how local authorities are best placed to identify and to respond to the needs of their local environment. We made a commitment in the One Wales document to support local authorities and community voluntary groups to improve the quality of their local environment."

Of the 22 local authorities, the biggest slice of the pie, £288,496 inevitably went to Cardiff. Monmouthshire ranked 18th with the smallest share of just £49,047 going to Merthyr.
