School pupil follows famous heritage

THE latest dynasty of the Scudamore horseracing family has just won an equestrian scholarship to a school that has produced riders who have gone on to represent Great Britain on the international stage.

10-year-old Lucy Scudamore, a distant relation of the famous jockeys of the past, is a pupil at Llangattock School and has been riding since she was four.

Lucy, who won the scholarship against stiff competition, had to ride three horses of varying temperaments and demonstrate her equestrian skills with each horse but she will be taking her Irish Cob, Fraggle to Stonar School in Wiltshire with her.

To achieve a scholarship requires confidence, determination and tenacity, qualities which Lucy considers she acquired at Llangattock School where she has been a pupil since 2002.

She also had to sit a maths, English and non-verbal reasoning test to achieve the scholarship.

Rosemary Whaley, the headteacher at Llangattock School expressed her delight at the news and said: "Well done Lucy. We all knew she excelled at horse riding and knew she could do it and go on to greater things."

Lucy, from Kentchurch, is already breaking in another horse for when she outgrows her current horse. She added: "I was encouraged in my attempt to get the scholarship by my school friends and Mrs Whaley, who helped me with tutoring."
