PLANS to spend £2.5m on rural areas in Monmouthshire and £1.5m in Torfaen have been welcomed by regional Assembly Member Mohammad Asghar.

He was commenting on an announcement by rural affairs minister Elin Jones, that Monmouthshire would get £2m from the Welsh Assembly Government towards rural projects - worth £2.5m in all.

Torfean would get £1.2m from the Assembly towards rural projects worth £1.5m in all.

Mr Asghar, who is a Plaid Cymru Assembly Member for South East Wales, said: "This three-year funding package, under the Assembly's Rural Development Plan, will mean a big boost to rural areas in Monmouthshire and other parts of Wales.

"I am pleased that projects encouraging tourism and heritage restoration have been given priority. These range from outdoor pursuit facilities to specialist food production.

"As well as diversifying the rural economy, the plan aims to improve basic services, help village renewal and improve training facilities.

"I am confident that this will help ensure a thriving rural economy and improve the quality of life for people living in our rural areas."
