Springing a leak

ONE of the largest regeneration projects ever planned for Torfaen could face a set-back after Pontypool Community Council raised objections to the latest plans.

Developers Spring Ltd hope to build around 800 homes in a £100 million project at the derelict British site in Talywain.

But first the company want to remove coal from the site and to stabilise the land, which once housed coal mines, iron works and a landfill tip.

The company have submitted their proposals for this scheme to Torfaen council, but consultees Pontypool Community Council have raised concerns.

Pontypool Community Council clerk, Ruth Tucker, said: "Although the council would welcome anything being done on the British to alleviate the many problems in the area, it has grave concerns about the processes that are intended to be used."

Local community councillor, Owen Clarke, agreed the land should be reclaimed, but was unhappy with the proposals.

He said the plans are not detailed enough to assure him of public safety and raised concerns about plans to remove part of the area's leisure track in order for workers access the site.

Mr Clarke says people feel strongly about the loss of the popular leisure track.

Spring Ltd Development Manager Ben Leather said the application is supported by a detailed Environmental Statement, which discusses safety measures and was prepared with Torfaen council, environment agency and other bodies.

He said the company intends to regularly consult with residents during the works.

Mr Leather said the site requires a northern and southern access. He said the leisure route has to be breached for engineering reasons and would not be within the working area.

He said Spring Ltd are proposing a new link for the leisure route to minimise disruption.

He added detailed plans of the houses have yet to be submitted and said local people will have the chance to express ideas.

Torfaen Council have not yet set a date for the full council meeting which will decide whether to approve the proposals.
