A NOVEL way of teaching children how to cook was served up at Kymin View Primary School this week.
Pupils and teachers climbed aboard a giant Cooking Bus for some hands-on cooking lessons in British and continental foods. Not to be left out parents were also treated to a session on board the cooking bus.
The Cooking Bus, which is grant funded by the Welsh Assembly through their Focus on Food scheme rolled into the school at Wyesham with expert food teachers on board.
Pupils throughout the school learnt how to make fresh, healthy food including honeyed vegetable kebabs, calzone and bread rolls, chicken ruby, sunset pasta salad, Spanish summer coca bread and mint and tomato kachumbar as part of the Focus on Food's Outreach programme.
The Focus on Food Campaign helps give children an insight and full control over their food lives - if they are taught how to cook delicious healthy food, then they have the tools for developing a healthier diet.
The children learnt how to cut, chop, slice and dice vegetables and salads; mix, knead, shape and bake breads; grate, crush stir and sieve foods and cook a range of meals from different cultures.
Headteacher Suzanne Gooding said: "The children had a fantastic time and each child came away with something they made to show and share with their families. The cooking bus initiative was a good way of having fun through education and a great achievement for everyone concerned."
