A Pembrokeshire Paralympic hopeful is delighted with the new archery centre that has been opened.

Jodie Grinham, from Haverfordwest, announced: "I feel honoured to be a part of the journey Archery GB has been on.

"To now have the Performance Archery Centre, which is a custom-made facility, is just incredible.

"It is honestly going to increase the level of competitiveness and training of GB archers."

The newly-opened Performance Archery Centre at Lilleshall National Sports Centre, Shropshire, will provide an elite daily training environment for Olympic and Paralympic archers, including Ms Grinham.

The state-of-the-art facility was funded by Sport England, with further support from UK Sport.

Aspiring contestants aiming for UK Sport’s World Class archery programme will also use the centre as a base, along with the National Compound Squad.

Ms Grinham has high aspirations after the centre's launch: "Due to this facility, my aspirations for the next year have increased.

"I want not only to get selected for the European championships and the Paris 2024 Paralympics but to bring back medals in team and individually."

Sport England executive director, Lisa Dodd-Mayne, expressed her support: "This dedicated Archery Performance Centre will give elite archers the greatest opportunity to prepare and compete on the world stage."

The state-of-the-art facility aims to foster a new generation of archers while also providing community groups and organisations' access to archery activities.

UK Sport’s performance director, Dr Kate Baker, is excited about the opportunities the new centre is providing.

She said: "We’re excited about the opening of the new centre, we think it can be a real game changer for our Olympic and Paralympic archers, both in the run-in to Paris and looking ahead to LA and Brisbane."

The centre is also committed to being eco-friendly featuring south-facing solar panels on the roof and an external air heat pump system to generate hot water, avoiding the use of gas supply altogether.

Dr Baker added: “The eco-friendly nature also aligns strongly with our sustainability strategy."

The newly-built facility features a 70m indoor and outdoor shooting range, accessible changing rooms, bathrooms, car and cycle parking, coaching and training support areas.

Tom Duggan, Archery GB’s performance director, appreciated the support from Sport England, UK Sport and Serco in making the new Archery Centre a reality.

"I’d like to thank Sport England, UK Sport and Serco for the opportunity to create a purpose-built Performance Archery Centre," he said.
