Watch out for distraction burglaries

POLICE are appealing for information after two distraction burglaries were committed yesterday within a couple of hours of each other.

The first occurred at Pitman's Court, Monmouth late morning when an elderly lady was asked by two males, who said they were from the waterboard, to check her water.

One went into the kitchen while the other said he was going to the flat upstairs. While the lady was distracted in the kitchen, a small amount of cash was stolen from the living room.

The second incident occurred at approximately 1pm at Clydach Street, Brynmawr when again, a man said he was from the water board and he needed to go into the kitchen. While he distracted the occupants, a significant amount of cash was stolen from elsewhere in the house.

The two men are described as looking similar to one another, having dark hair, dark eyes and olive skin. They are described as about 20 years of age, of slim build and about 5ft 8ins tall. They were described as dressed in smart dark coloured clothing, but not suits.

Police are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen the offenders in either area at the time of the incidents to call Gwent Police on 01633 838111 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Police are particularly appealing for a man who walked through Pitman's Court to access the library in Monmouth between 11am and 11.30am who may have seen the offenders.
