SIX MONMMOUTHSHIRE schools had overspent their annual budgets by the end of March.
According to a report to Monmouthshire County Council, Our Lady at St Michael's RC Primary in Abergavenny had a £82,976 deficit. Others in deficit are Caldicot School (£43,439), Monmouth Comprehensive (£31,766), Llanvihangel Crucorney Primary (£6,359), Magor Primary (£12,910) and Usk Primary (£35,012).
A spokeswoman said each school has different circumstances and there may be several reasons behind overspending. "Unpredictable" staffing costs and changing pupil numbers are among them.
Recovery plan meetings with headteachers of schools are arranged if a school falls into deficit.
"This means the school reviews all areas of expenditure and any additional sources of funding," she said.
These may include staff costs, the largest element of a school's budget.
